Effingham County Area GuideEffingham is a beautiful historic city located in the heart of Georgia just north of Savannah between the Ogeechee and Savannah Rivers currently boasting one of the fasted growth rates in the nation. This serene Southern coastal town boasts rapturous beauty and untold refinement extending from a rich history and genteel community of friends and neighbors. History Effingham’s rich history dates back over three-hundred years and plays centrally into the greater narrative of the American odyssey. The beautiful river shores of Effingham were originally settled by Austrian religious refugees seeking greater freedoms in 1769 after unsuccessful attempts at other locations. Originally, this region was settled under the advisement and council of General John Oglethorpe, the founder of Savannah, Georgia’s oldest city. The settlement built here was named “Ebenezer” after a biblical word meaning “stone of help.” Unfortunately, disease and hardship led these original settlers to vacate their original choice for township and instead establish New Ebenezer along the banks of the Savannah River. New Ebenezer was a more fortified position for the settlers consisting of a quarter-mile township built of brick walls crafted from fine clay atop a high bluff. The walls of this historical township still stand today, making it one of the oldest places of worship in the country! These newly established settlers soon flourished, and eventually proved to be the forerunners of the American Industrial revolution by building the first water-powered gristmill in the country and for a time producing more than a ton of silk annually. Effingham was officially made one of eight original counties in Georgia by the State Constitution in 1777. At this point, it was one of the largest counties, but has since been whittled down to form other surrounding counties. The county itself is named for Lord Effingham, a British army colonel who refused to take up arms against the colonists during the American Revolution. Effingham was also home to Georgia’s first Governor, John Adam Treutlen, whose family fled persecution from Austria with other German immigrants and eventually settled in Georgia. Effingham’s parks and recreation department strives to provide opportunities to enjoy nature and comradery while fostering sportsmanship, positive interaction, and meaningful communal experience.
