Bryan County Area Guide

Bryan County presents the best of both worlds to its residents, with the quiet tranquility of suburban paradise at its northern end and a bustling residential coastal community in the south. This Georgian safe-haven is drenched in history and loaded with diverse activities, historic sites, and attractions!

History

Situated between the Ogeechee and Cancoohee Rivers, Bryan County is an area of just under five-hundred square miles created in 1793.

It was formed from land borrowed from the counties of Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty. It was later split apart by the U.S. Government to make room for Fort Stewart.

Bryan was named for American Revolutionary War hero Jonathan Bryan, who aided General John Oglethorpe in establishing Georgia. Bryan also served as the areas treasurer and was personal friends with John Wesley.

During the American Civil War, Bryan County was captured by General William Tecumseh Sherman during his “March to the Sea” campaign. It later resurfaced as a bustling agricultural center envied for its supreme rice lands.

This quaint coastal community lies south of historic Savannah, and shares in its charm, scenery, and communal spirit.

Home to delectable local sea food and untold levels of history, this family centered community boasts a remarkably low crime rate, incredibly robust cultural scene, and exceedingly attractive neighborhoods.
