Great State of Georgia

City of Savannah Savannah

Was established on February 12, 1733 when General James Oglethorpe founded Georgia. The city was named for the Savannah River, a local waterway. Oglethorpe carefully planned the city's streets by using a grid pattern with 24 park-like squares. Savannah has the distinction of being the first city in the state of Georgia. There are numerous attractions in Savannah to increase cultural awareness and make Savannah the "Hostess City of the South". Savannah is home to a National Historic Landmark District of 2.5 square miles, and more than 1,100 architecturally significant buildings. The Victorian District is one of the nation's largest collections of that period's architecture.

Due to the national bestseller and movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the Mercer House on Monterey Square has become one of the most recognized homes. To appreciate Savannah's architectural heritage and style, there are a number of homes in the historic district, including the Green-Meldrim House and the Juliette Gordon Low family home, the founder of the Girl Scouts. According to 2000 Census, the City of Savannah had a population of 131,510 persons. Between 1990 and 2000, the city experienced a population decrease of -4.6%, compared to the state growth during this period of 26.4%.

So for the last four months, I’ve been telling myself over and over again that I need to go to one of the many local farmer’s markets. The soft, squashy tomatoes I got last week at an undisclosed local grocery chain were the last straw. All I want is a ripe, firm tomato for my salads, sandwiches, veggie plates, etc. My boyfriend and I started researching (if you call searching Savannah Farmer’s Markets through Goggle research) and found several local ones. There were a few that I won’t be able to go to because of the days and hours I work here, which is a bummer because Starland sounds nice. Too bad it’s only open one day a week, but I understand that’s how most farmer’s markets work. On Monday, the beau and I went to Savannah State Farmer’s Market. The people there were really nice and friendly. I was a little disappointed because there were less than six vendors there… It may have been the time of the day. We went around 2 p.m., and I know in North Carolina, most farmers are out selling in the morning. I was thinking I’ll give it a chance earlier one morning. Regardless, I found some great, great tomatoes that were perfectly ripe and firm and about $1.50 per pound cheaper than the local chain grocers. Nice. Next time, we might try Polk’s Fresh Market. It sounded nice online, too. Have any of y’all been to it? There was also mention of one in today’s paper called Trustee Market. I guess I won’t know which one is the best until I venture out there. The hint for good tomatoes continues.
